An exciting new chapter for Cliftonville as The Oval Bandstand and Lawns is awarded to the GRASS Cliftonville community group.
We are thrilled to announce, after months of hard work and preparation, that GRASS Cliftonville has been chosen as the preferred buyer for The Oval Bandstand as a community asset transfer from Thanet District Council.
It’s been a long road, which we embarked on nearly three year’s ago, so we are overwhelmed with excitement at the prospect of creating a bright future for this iconic piece of Cliftonville coastline.
The council has placed its faith in GRASS as suitable custodians of the land, which has such a rich history within Thanet and UK seaside culture & heritage.
The news allows us to initiate a number of new projects and to start building on existing ones – there is much to do but we are determined as a organisation firmly rooted in our community that this amazing space will be a truly inclusive community-first venue that celebrates the beautiful coastal location, and our richly diverse demographic.
GRASS has already hosted lots of free events at The Oval, including the Cliftonville Games and a summer season of Cliftonville Outdoor Cinema screenings. The success of these events has proven that the bandstand venue can thrive, and we look forward to once again restoring this stunning community asset back to its best for the benefit of all.
We’d like to thank Thanet District Council for their co-operation, and our local councillors for their continued support, and we look forward to fully engaging with the Margate community to start the next exciting chapter in the Oval’s illustrious history.
